Transmitting on amateur (ham) frequencies requires an FCC amateur radio license. GMRS requires an FCC GMRS license (no exam).

Where the name comes from

What’s 5-9?

Radio operators trade signal reports to tell each other how they’re coming through. On a voice contact, the report is two numbers: the first rates readability from 1 to 5, and the second rates signal strength from 1 to 9.

A “5-9” is the best report you can get: perfectly readable and extremely strong. In plain English, loud and clear. That’s the goal behind every 5NINE build.
