Our story

Meet Joshua & Jessica

5NINE Communications, founded by Joshua and Jessica, is dedicated to delivering custom off-grid radio solutions and expert consulting that help individuals, teams, and organizations maintain reliable communications in outdoor and emergency situations.

Joshua brings nearly a decade of U.S. Army service as a Cavalry Scout, where he developed a background in tactical, outdoor, and emergency communications. Since his medical retirement from the Army, Joshua has developed a passion for amateur and GMRS radio, and he has been licensed on both for 7 years (call signs KI5LQM and WSEA270). As a disabled veteran with a lifelong passion for emergency preparedness, backpacking, and hiking, he focuses on designing and building custom off-grid radio systems that perform when conventional networks fail.

Jessica complements this technical foundation with a strong background in people-centered service. A 2013 graduate of Texas State University with a degree in Recreational Therapy, and a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist for 12 years, she has worked in event planning and case management for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army.

Together, they founded 5NINE Communications out of a genuine desire to equip outdoor enthusiasts, preparedness-minded individuals, and organizations with the tools and knowledge to stay connected, prepared, and informed—especially when the grid goes down.

“I specialize in communications consulting and customized communication solutions… My goal is to deliver practical, reliable, and personalized communication solutions that give customers confidence when it matters most.”

Where the name comes from

What’s 5-9?

Radio operators trade signal reports to tell each other how they’re coming through. On a voice contact, the report is two numbers: the first rates readability from 1 to 5, and the second rates signal strength from 1 to 9.

A “5-9” is the best report you can get: perfectly readable and extremely strong. In plain English, loud and clear. That’s the goal behind every 5NINE build.

Readability
5
out of 5: perfectly readable
Strength
9
out of 9: extremely strong
